Frequently asked questions

What should I enter as available cash?

Enter money available for your everyday budget right now, including money for unpaid bills and savings you have not transferred yet. Exclude money already held in a separate savings account. You can enter that separately as “Already in savings”; it is not deducted again.

Do not record another cash deduction for old spending or bills already paid and reflected in the balance you enter. SpendToday cannot read your bank balance, so keep your entries up to date.

How is “Left to spend today” calculated?

SpendToday keeps money aside for unpaid bills and your savings plans, then allocates spendable cash across the days before your next payday. Recurring bills can need money protected now even when they are due after that payday. Expected income stays a forecast until you confirm it has arrived.

Your daily allowance updates as you record spending and move towards your next payday. The estimate depends on your cash, schedules and other entries; it does not move money or guarantee that a plan is affordable.

What does daily rollover mean?

If your normal allowance is £50 and you spend £40, the full £10 left carries into tomorrow: £50 plus £10 gives £60. Overspending carries forward too. Changes to your budget can adjust future allowances.

Rollover never makes protected bill or savings money available for everyday spending.

How do monthly bills work with weekly pay?

The app spreads recurring bill contributions across your pay schedule and checks what can be ready by each due date. A near deadline can require more money to be kept aside now. A bill collected on payday is checked before that day’s expected income.

“Already protected” is backed by cash you have entered. “Still needed now” identifies a funding gap. Future pay and planned contributions remain forecasts; they do not mean that income has arrived or that everyday spending has been recorded.

Does paying a protected bill reduce my allowance twice?

No. Recording a bill payment reduces cash and its matching protection together, so that protected portion is not deducted from spendable money twice. A partial payment releases only the matching part; future bill occurrences retain their own protection.

An overdue bill stays unpaid until you record what happened. SpendToday does not mark bills paid automatically. Mark a bill paid only when it really is paid.

What happens on payday?

Confirm the amount actually received or reschedule the expected date. Only confirmed income is added. Unused cash and outstanding protection carry forward, and the next bill and savings contributions are planned once.

If payday passes without confirmation, SpendToday asks you to update it and keeps the available allowance at zero.

How do general savings and multiple goals work?

Savings are optional. Choose a recurring monthly general savings amount and create several goals, each with a monthly contribution or a target date. Plans keep money aside; they do not transfer it to a savings account. Goal progress increases when you record money actually saved.

Goal contributions are additional to general savings unless you explicitly assign protected general money with “Use general savings”. That assignment moves no cash and does not count as actual savings. Money already held separately is never added or deducted twice.

How should I record a savings transfer?

When money really leaves your current cash, record the transfer once using “From available cash”. Matching goal protection is fulfilled first; any extra transfer reduces spendable cash. A goal’s transfer cannot silently use another goal’s protection.

If a cash correction already includes the transfer, use “Already saved elsewhere” and deliberately release matching protected money in Savings. A saved-balance correction or money added from elsewhere changes separate savings only. For a withdrawal, choose whether money actually returned to available cash.

What happens if I pause, archive or delete a goal?

Editing or pausing a plan adjusts its current contribution. Older protected amounts stay aside until you transfer or release them. Archiving retains savings and history and stops future contributions. Deleting hides the goal while retaining internal history needed for accurate accounting.

None of these actions moves money or erases the whole budget. To erase all local budget data, use the separate confirmed reset in Settings.

Are goal completion dates guaranteed?

No. They are estimates based on your target, actual savings, protected contributions, pay schedule and planned future contributions. A deadline goal uses the available contribution dates, so the required contribution can differ from dividing the target by a number of months.

Keeping money aside helps fund a plan but does not mark that money as already saved.

Can I correct my cash or an expense, or record a refund?

Use History to edit or delete spending entries or record a refund. A cash correction is a fresh statement of what you actually have now. Earlier spending is already included, so editing or deleting those older records does not charge or credit the same cash again.

On that day, “Since cash update” shows spending after the correction. A refund actually received afterwards still adds cash. Use “Already included in my cash” only when an earlier entry genuinely forms part of the corrected balance.

Why is my daily figure zero or negative?

If bills and planned savings need more than your current cash, today’s available amount is zero and the app shows what needs attention. Spending more than a day’s allowance can also make the remaining figure negative.

Review available cash, unpaid bills, savings plans and your pay date. These estimates depend on your entries; SpendToday cannot see your live bank balance.

Why are my widget amounts hidden?

New budgets show amounts after onboarding. Turn on “Conceal widget amounts” in Settings to hide them for privacy, or turn it off to show them. Existing budgets retain their saved choice, and older budgets without a saved choice remain concealed.

Anyone who can see a visible widget can see its amounts. When concealment is enabled, monetary fields in the shared widget snapshot are zeroed and the spending ring is hidden.

Why is my widget out of date or asking me to open the app?

iOS controls widget refresh timing. The widget follows its saved daily schedule, including rollover, until a payday or bill-funding boundary needs a fresh calculation. Then it asks you to open SpendToday.

Open the app for the latest figure after budget changes or a time-zone change. A widget cannot obtain new bank information or confirm income for you.

What does the medium widget’s ring show?

The filled part shows today’s recorded spending and the remaining track shows money still available from today’s allowance, including rollover. The large amount remains the main figure. If you overspend a positive allowance, the ring is full and shows 100%+.

The ring is omitted when there is no meaningful positive allowance, the widget is concealed or needs a review, accessibility text is large, or space is limited. The small widget prioritises the amount and has no ring.

How do reminders work?

Reminders are optional notifications scheduled on your device. Enable them in SpendToday and allow notifications in device Settings. Budgeting still works if permission is denied.

Reminder text is generic and does not include bill names, amounts or balances. Delivery depends on the device’s notification settings.

Can I change my language or currency?

SpendToday supports English, Romanian, Turkish, German, French and Spanish. Language and currency are independent settings. The country you choose suggests suitable starting settings; you can change them.

Changing currency does not exchange money. An explicit confirmation can relabel amounts only when decimal precision matches and the numbers already represent the new currency. For a different precision, export a backup and start a new budget.

How do I back up or restore my budget?

Use Settings to export or restore the complete budget, including history, bills, goals and preferences. Export files are unencrypted: select a trusted destination and protect them as private financial information. A chosen cloud-backed Files destination is controlled by that provider and your settings.

Import asks before replacing your current budget rather than merging entries. Invalid or unsupported backups leave your current data intact. Export first if you want to keep it. SpendToday has no developer-run backup or recovery service.

How do I delete my budget?

The confirmed delete-all action in Settings clears the local budget, widget summary and scheduled app reminders. It does not erase exported files or copies in external or device backups; delete those separately where they are stored.

Removing the app may remove local data. Keep a backup you trust if you need a recoverable copy. The developer cannot recover a lost local budget.

Why am I asked to review savings after an update?

An older savings field did not clearly distinguish money already saved separately from new money to set aside. Your amount and history are preserved. Choose which meaning applies, or enter the two amounts yourself.

The daily figure resumes after confirmation. SpendToday does not guess which balance you meant.

Are any features extra?

One paid App Store download includes all Basic manual budgeting features, widgets and reminders. There are no subscriptions, upgrade purchases or in-app Restore Purchases button. Apple handles payment, redownloads and purchase-refund requests.

SpendToday Basic does not connect to a bank or automatically capture Apple Pay purchases. Record spending manually and keep your cash balance up to date.
